Plan your marriage now

A couple planning a wedding in Thailand may have to send money before they see anything. A resort asks for a deposit to hold a date. A planner asks for a first payment to begin work. The couple has seen nothing of the business except a name on a website. There is a free check that can be made from abroad before the transfer leaves the account. This article sets out that check, and what to do if the money has gone.

If you plan to register your marriage in Thailand, our marriage registration service covers the documents, the legalization and the district office for one fixed fee.

The public company register

Thailand keeps a public register of its companies. It is held by the Department of Business Development, which is the department of the Ministry of Commerce that registers businesses. Its online service is the DBD DataWarehouse, at datawarehouse.dbd.go.th. An article published on Mondaq in July 2024 states that a company can be searched by its registration number.

ThaiGov.co, in a guide last verified on 28 August 2026, lists what the department publishes without charge: the registration number, the registered capital, the directors, the trading status and the years for which financial statements have been filed. Registered capital is the amount the shareholders committed to the company when it was registered.

The thirteen-digit number

Every company registered in Thailand is given a thirteen-digit registration number. It identifies the company as a juristic person, which is a business that Thai law treats as a person in its own right. ThaiGov.co states that the number stays the same when the company moves or changes its name. MSNA Group wrote in January 2025 that a limited company may use that same number as its tax identification number.

Section 86/4 of the Revenue Code requires a tax invoice to carry the name, the address and the taxpayer identification number of the registered business that issues it. A tax invoice is the document a business registered for value added tax issues when it charges that tax. Value added tax is the tax added to the price of most goods and services.

Asking for a quotation or a tax invoice

ThaiGov.co advises asking the business for a quotation or a tax invoice that already carries its number. A registered business will usually carry the number on its quotations and contracts. The guide treats an unwillingness to give the number as a signal in itself. It advises against transferring money in that case. Where the number is given, put it into the register and read the record.

If the money has already been sent

Go to the bank first. ThaiGov.co advises reporting the transfer to your bank at once and asking about freezing the receiving account. The Emergency Decree on Measures for the Prevention and Suppression of Technological Crimes came into force on 17 March 2023. It covers crimes committed through technology, such as deception carried out online. Tilleke and Gibbins reported that month that the decree requires a bank to suspend the related transactions for seventy-two hours when an account holder reports being the victim of such a crime. The bank can therefore act before any police report exists.

The police come next. Tilleke and Gibbins also reported that the victim must file a police complaint within seventy-two hours of the suspension. The suspension is then held for seven days from that complaint. ThaiGov.co advises bringing the transfer slips, the chat history and the receiving account details. Do not make a second payment in order to release the first. The guide states that a demand for a further payment to unlock money already sent is the next stage of the same scheme.
