Plan your marriage now

Wedding photographers in Thailand publish packages, galleries and hourly rates. GP Production, a wedding photography company working in Thailand, lists drone shots among its add-ons. The drone shot carries requirements of its own. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, the national aviation regulator, treats a drone as an unmanned aircraft, so aviation rules govern the shot. This article covers the cost, the drone shot and the places that need their own permission.

If you plan to register your marriage in Thailand, our marriage registration service covers the documents, the legalization and the district office for one fixed fee.

What a short session costs

Local Lens, an international photographer booking service, publishes Phuket packages from 250 United States dollars for thirty minutes to 545 dollars for two hours. Tropica Wedding, a Thai planning company, publishes a standard photoshoot at 5,500 baht (~165 USD) for one to two hours. Photographer Phuket Thailand, a local studio, sets a minimum of 5,000 baht (~150 USD) an hour. Full-day coverage sits higher, and our guide to eloping in Thailand gives that figure. These are the vendors' own published prices. Local Lens publishes in dollars. Prices and exchange rates move. We do not vet, endorse or guarantee any vendor.

The two registrations a camera drone needs

The aviation authority's published guidance states which drones must be registered. A drone with a camera must be registered, whatever it weighs. Every wedding drone therefore falls inside the rules.

A drone user registers with two authorities. The first is the aviation authority, for the drone and for a drone pilot certificate, through its online registration portal. A drone pilot certificate shows that the pilot passed the required knowledge test. The second is the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, which grants permission to use the drone's radio frequency. Lex Bangkok, a Bangkok law firm, summarizes the penalties. Flying without the aviation registration carries up to one year in prison, a fine of up to 40,000 baht (~1,210 USD), or both. For the telecommunications side the same firm gives, as an example, a fine of up to 100,000 baht (~3,020 USD) or imprisonment of up to five years.

The flying rules

The operating conditions come from the Ministry of Transport announcement of 2 July 2015. A drone must not fly higher than 90 meters above the ground. It must stay in the pilot's sight and fly only between sunrise and sunset. It must not fly within nine kilometers of an airport without that airport's permission, or over cities, villages, communities or places where people are gathered. The pilot needs the landowner's permission before taking off. For the smallest recreational drones the announcement sets a horizontal distance of 30 meters from people, vehicles, structures and buildings. A registered camera drone must keep 50 meters instead, measured from people, vehicles and buildings not related to the flight operations. The authority tells pilots to check no-fly zones before flying.

Photography and filming are their own category

The same announcement divides drones by purpose. The first purpose is hobby, entertainment or sport. The second covers everything else, and names photographing, filming and television programs. A photographer working for a fee is therefore outside the hobby purpose. The drone's operator applies to the Director General of the aviation authority. The application states the purpose of the flight and where the drone will fly. The operator must hold insurance covering damage to other people, of not less than one million baht for each flight. The announcement does not say where a couple photographing their own wedding falls.

Places that need their own permission

Two kinds of place ask for more. National parks are the first. My Drone Thailand, a Thai drone service, wrote in January 2025 that a park permit from the park administration is needed on top of the two registrations. The same page places Railay and Koh Phi Phi inside a national park where rangers enforce it. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation runs Thailand's parks. Temples are the second. The Nation reported in September 2024 that Wat Rajabopit in Bangkok banned weddings, photography and commercial activity on its grounds. Permission is asked rather than assumed.

Light, season and the booking order

Light decides the pictures more than the venue does. Our article on the best time of year to marry in Thailand sets out the rule. November to February is the clearest window for most of the country. The Andaman coast stays dry from November to April. The rainy season on one coast is the dry season on the other. Sunrise gives the same low light as sunset and an emptier beach. Our guide to eloping in Thailand sets the booking order. Ask the photographer whether the drone is registered, and who holds the permission for your chosen place. Compliance is the operator's responsibility, not ours.

Photographs on registration day

The registration day has pictures of its own. We collect the couple, attend the district office, complete the registration and take photographs. A district office is the government office that registers marriages. We film content only after asking the couple's consent.

Pride Legal Thailand was created to become the platform for the LGBTQ community around the world looking to get married in Thailand. We make the legal part plannable from abroad and completable in a single trip. The photographer, the drone and the beach stay yours to choose.

Pride Legal Thailand arranges the registration of marriages in Thailand for two people of any gender and any nationality. The fee is ฿49,000 (~1,480 USD) for both partners, fixed, with VAT and government fees included; registration outside the Bangkok region costs ฿10,000 (~300 USD) more.
