Plan your marriage now

A couple who bring their documents with them stay in Thailand for six working days at the minimum after the embassy step, and we recommend eight to ten. Everything that is not paperwork is arranged inside those days. Flowers are one of those things. Arranging them does not require a florist booked from abroad weeks ahead. Bangkok holds a fresh flower market that never closes and makes bouquets and garlands to order. This article explains what that market is, when it is fullest, what it sells, and what a Thai flower garland means. It also explains where flowers already sit in the legal day itself.

If you plan to register your marriage in Thailand, our marriage registration service covers the documents, the legalization and the district office for one fixed fee.

Pak Khlong Talat

Pak Khlong Talat is Bangkok's principal fresh flower market. It sits in the Phra Nakhon district, beside the Chao Phraya river, on Chak Phet Road between Wat Pho and the Memorial Bridge. It is a wholesale market and a retail market at the same time. Traders buy there in quantity, and members of the public buy small quantities at the same stalls. The Nation reported in November 2025 that it is Thailand's largest wholesale flower market and that it is open twenty-four hours a day. The same report routes visitors on the MRT, Bangkok's metro, to Sanam Chai station, then on foot.

When the market is fullest

The market runs around the clock, but it is not equally busy at every hour. Flowers arrive overnight by truck from farms across Thailand, and the market fills when they are unloaded. A Bangkok guide published in November 2025 gives four to seven in the morning as the hours when wholesalers deliver, and eight to eleven at night as the hours when garland makers work. A travel guide updated in February 2024 gives four to six in the morning as the peak. A couple who wants the fullest selection should go very early or late in the evening.

What the market sells

The stalls sell fresh cut flowers by the stem and by the bundle. Roses, carnations, orchids, jasmine, lotus, chrysanthemums and marigolds are the staples. Imported flowers such as tulips appear alongside them. Vendors also sell the materials that go around an arrangement, such as banana leaves. Many vendors make up bouquets, garlands and floral pieces to order rather than only selling ready-made ones. A floral trade publication reported in February 2025 that flower arranging at the market caters to weddings and festivals. This matters to a couple on a short trip, because a bouquet can be ordered at a stall instead of booked from abroad.

Market prices

Prices at Pak Khlong Talat are market prices. They move with the supply of the day, and no seller is bound by any published figure. Published guides therefore give ranges rather than quotations. The Bangkok guide published in November 2025 reports stems sold in bundles of fifty for under fifty baht. Read that as an indication of the order of cost at a wholesale market, not as a price you will be offered.

Phuang malai

A phuang malai is a Thai flower garland. It is a loop of flowers strung by hand on cotton thread. Jasmine is the core flower and marigold is the usual accent. Both carry meaning. Jasmine, dok mali in Thai, stands for purity. Marigold, dao rueang in Thai, is gold in color and stands for prosperity and long life. A third flower, the crown flower, dok rak, appears in wedding garlands and stands for lasting love. They are made fresh at the market, in the same early and late hours when it fills.

Thai people use phuang malai in two ways that matter at a wedding. The first is as an offering. Garlands are laid at temples, at Buddha images and at spirit houses, the small shrines that stand in the grounds of Thai homes and buildings. The second is as a mark of respect for a person. Hosts give garlands at weddings and at other family celebrations, and garlands are offered to elders, teachers and parents on important days. That second use is what makes a garland worth carrying at a wedding rather than merely buying. Offering one to a parent who has traveled for the wedding is that gesture, made without a word of Thai. The garland is given to a person, and the giving is the point.

Flowers on registration day

Flowers are already part of the day we run. On registration day we collect the couple, buy flowers on the way, and attend the district office with one translator and two witnesses. We complete the registration, take photographs and congratulate the couple. A couple who wants flowers of their own choosing can buy them at the market at any hour. A couple who would rather arrange nothing that morning does not have to.

Pride Legal Thailand was created to become the platform for the LGBTQ community around the world looking to get married in Thailand. We make the legal half plannable from abroad and completable in a single trip, so that the parts of the week that are not legal stay entirely yours.
