Who Are We? The Story Behind Pride Legal Thailand

Since January 2025, Thailand's marriage equality law lets two people marry regardless of gender. Couples of every nationality can get married under this law, given that they have the required documents and are present at the district office with a translator and two witnesses. However, given these requirements, it is nearly impossible for a foreign couple to plan the marriage from abroad and get married during their short trip. It is the lack of legal infrastructure to service these couples. Pride Legal Thailand was created to become the platform for the LGBTQ community around the world looking to get married in Thailand: we want to make this plannable from abroad and completable in a single trip.

The law that made this possible

Thailand's Marriage Equality Act came into force on 23 January 2025, after the National Assembly passed it in 2024. It amended the marriage provisions of the Civil and Commercial Code so that marriage is a contract between two persons rather than between a man and a woman, and it made Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia — and, after Taiwan and Nepal, the third in Asia and the thirty-eighth in the world — to open marriage to couples of any gender. On the first day the law took effect, the government helped host a mass wedding celebration in Bangkok.

This matters most to readers abroad because the law is not reserved for Thai couples. A foreign couple with no connection to Thailand can marry here. The main conditions: neither partner needs to be Thai or to live in Thailand, and both must be single and able to prove it with documents.

Why Pride Legal was founded

The law is, in fact, in effect, the right is attainable, but the process that carries it is not. Marriage registration in Thailand happens at a district office, in Thai, under Thai administrative rules. While the documents come from your home country through its own authorities, there are no guideline on which document are accepted; also they must be translated and legalized, checked and stamped by the authorities of both countries, so that Thai authorities can trust your document, before Thailand accepts them. A couple planning this from abroad usually meets that process with no one to guide them.

Pride Legal was founded by a Thai lawyer when the Marriage Equality Act made it possible for LGBTQ couple from around the world to get legally married, but there was no one to assist them. We prepare and check documents, arrange certified translation and legalization at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, book the district office, and attend the registration itself, end to end.

Marriage as Thailand's newest soft power

Soft power is the influence a country gains when the world comes to it willingly — for its food, its beaches, its hospitality. We believe marriage equality now belongs on that list. Every marriage registered here ties a couple, their families and their friends to Thailand, and we want Thailand to be known as the place in Asia where a same-sex couple can get married without confusion and without fear.

Our commitment to the community

Registration is our service, but it is not the whole of our purpose. Marriage equality becomes real only when the legal infrastructure around it allows people to access the right. Pride Legal is building that infrastructure for the LGBTQ community. We are building a legal infrastructure for LGBTQ community, we start with marriage equality, but we will not stop here. We will contribute further to the community.

How we work with a couple

Pride Legal Thailand arranges the registration of marriages in Thailand for two people of any gender and any nationality. The fee is ฿49,000 (~1,480 USD) for both partners, fixed, with VAT and government fees included; registration outside the Bangkok region costs ฿10,000 (~300 USD) more.
