A wedding in Thailand is usually two separate events. One is the legal registration at a district office. A district office is the local government office that records marriages. The other is the celebration, held wherever you choose. The registration asks who must be present by law. The celebration asks who you want there, and who you are able to tell. This article keeps the two apart, so you can invite people to one and not the other.
If you plan to register your marriage in Thailand, our marriage registration service covers the documents, the legalization and the district office for one fixed fee.
Both partners attend the district office in person. The office also needs a translator and two witnesses. A witness is a person who watches you sign and signs the register. We bring one translator and two witnesses to every registration we handle. We collect the couple, buy flowers on the way and attend the appointment. No guest has to be there. A couple with fifty people flying in can still register the marriage with nobody present but the two of them and our team.
The guest list is not only a question of numbers. Some couples are out to everyone and want a full room. Some are out to a few people. Some cannot tell their families at all. Because the registration and the celebration are separate events, the guest list can be separate too. You can register quietly and celebrate later. You can invite friends and tell no relative about either day. Registering does not require you to notify or invite anyone.
Bespoke-Bride's Thailand planning guide advises booking nine to twelve months ahead for a peak-season date, and names November to February as the best window. Phuket Event Company, a planner working across Thailand, gives the same nine to twelve months. It adds that a room block should be arranged early, because a wedding weekend can sell out the rooms at a popular destination. A room block is a group of rooms a hotel holds for your guests at an agreed rate. Elite Havens, which rents private villas in Phuket and Koh Samui, says to start villa wedding planning at least twelve to eighteen months in advance.
Phuket Event Company writes that Thai cultural elements need to be planned at least three months out. It names water blessing ceremonies, traditional dancers and Buddhist elements. Three months before the date is therefore the latest sensible point to ask for them.
The same planner describes a destination wedding as a three to five day experience for the people who travel to it. It writes that airport transfers, welcome dinners and a group excursion are expected at destination weddings. A welcome dinner is a meal on the evening the guests arrive. That planner negotiates the room block and schedules the transfers.
Guests usually fly into one of four airports. Airports of Thailand is the state enterprise that runs the country's main airports. It operates Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Phuket International Airport and Chiang Mai International Airport. Koh Samui is served by Samui International Airport, which Bangkok Airways describes as Thailand's first privately owned airport, handling domestic and selected international flights.
Entry rules are set by Thailand and they differ by nationality. They also change. Ask each guest to check the rules for their own passport before booking a flight, on the website of the Thai embassy or consulate that serves them. Two guests on the same trip can hold passports that are treated differently.
The celebration is booked far earlier than the documents are gathered. We ask couples to gather their documents roughly one to two months before flying in, and to start no more than about three months before the planned registration date. A document proving that you are single can pass out of use if it is collected too early. A couple booking a venue a year ahead is therefore not collecting papers a year ahead. They are fixing the date that the document work will aim at.
Your own trip can be longer than your guests' trip. Some nationalities must make an embassy visit. An embassy visit is an appointment at your own country's embassy in Thailand at which the document showing you are free to marry is issued. If you bring your documents with you, the Thai side needs six working days at the minimum after the embassy step, and we recommend eight to ten. If your documents and a power of attorney were legalized at home and sent to us ahead, only the registration day is left. A power of attorney is a document that authorizes another person to act for you. Working days are days on which Thai government offices are open. An embassy appointment sits in front of those days, so it lengthens the trip. Your guests do not need to be present for any of those days.
